Saban Not Getting Much Love for Bama Decision

January 3rd, 2007 | , ,

The gloves are off. From writers at ESPN.com to the message boards & blogs to the rowdy LSU fans in down New Orleans, Nick Saban is catching serious heat. Not that he cares. With that kind of guaranteed money, who would? We’re not surprised by the fans and message boarders, but we didn’t expect members of the major media to be so blunt.

  • The front page at ESPN.com currently features a pic of Saban with a big bold headline reading “The Lying Game”. Ouch.
  • If you click the headline, it leads to an article by Pat Forde titled “Saban Only Lied When His Lips Were Moving“. Ouch again.

  • Bayou Bengals Blog
, penned by sportswriters from the Shreveport Times, has a post entitled “Snake in the Grass”, wherein they quote LSU fans shouting “Go to hell Nick Saban, Go to hell!” down in New Orleans.

But the truly funny stuff is on the LSU and Miami message boards. Those guys are seriously pissed.

Frankly, we think it’s all a bit harsh. Did Nick Saban “lie” about his intentions when asked, both at LSU and at Miami? Sure he did. So what? Most people lie, or at least would lie, if asked whether they were actively looking at other job opportunities. Maybe before people criticize, they should reflect on the stupidity of expecting an honest answer when asking someone such a question. We’re also not sure how this makes Nick Saban a “traitor” to LSU, as they’re claiming on numerous forums. The guy came to LSU, stayed five years and took what appeared at the time to be a better opportunity, both in terms of compensation and career advancements and accomplishments. Hard to fault anyone for that, unless you’re just selfish. Two years later, the new job really isn’t what he expected it to be, the old one isn’t available, and someone has made him an attractive offer. Hmmm. Ok. Still not seeing the whole “traitor” thing. Maybe someone can explain it to us?
