It’s Official: Jimbo Fisher is Leaving LSU to be Offensive Coordinator at Florida State

January 8th, 2007 | , , , ,

The on again / off again deal is apparently on for real this time. ESPN reported that Florida State University has officially hired LSU Offensive Coordinator Jimbo Fisher to fill the same role for the Seminoles under head coach coach Bobby Bowden. This development gives us several things to think about as college football fans.

  • Will be any lasting tension between Fisher and Bowden, due to Bowden’s public withdrawal of the offer on Sunday?
  • What exactly caused the withdrawal of the offer, and what led FSU to re-extend it to Fisher?
  • Why didn’t Fisher and Sexton pursue the newly vacant head coaching position at the University of Louisville?
  • Where does this leave Nick Saban and Alabama? Is Catholic High alum Major Applewhite the next Offensive Coordinator for the Crimson Tide?
  • How do Les Miles and LSU go about replacing Fisher? Do they promote from within or go shopping? More importantly, if they go shopping, will they go after a respected, top-notch coordinator, or go cheap?
  • Will the departure of Jimbo Fisher have any impact on Tiger quarterback Jamarcus Russell’s decision to stay at LSU for his senior season or enter the NFL draft?
  • Assuming Russell leaves, will Les Miles have the foresight to hire a coordinator who will implement an offense that best utilizes Ryan Perrilloux’s athletic abilities?

How about we go after Major Applewhite? He’s very promising, and shouldn’t be too expensive.

I would be fine with that, if Bama doesnt get him first. But I suspect we’re promoting from within.

    1) No. See #2

    2) The beef between FSU and Fisher is getting hung on Sexton’s overzealousness. Fisher and Bowden finally spoke after that press release went out. Bobby wouldn’t have offered him again if Fisher didn’t sing the right song, so I trust they agreed to have a beer and laugh it off.

    3) Sexton was told –point blank– that Fisher was not the #1 candidate. He did inquire.

    4) Applewhite is likely to be co-OC at ‘Bama. He may share the reigns for a few years with their OL coach.

    5) Apparently Fisher put some stink on Miles, which could impact the search to some degree. Miles was painted as being very, very invasive. Not sure if that’s true, but that is the message that the Fisher camp was sending out.

    6) Well, now that JR is gone, I guess the question is did Fisher’s decision have anything to do with JR’s decision?

    7) A better question is - what’s going on with Ryan Perrilloux? There are a lot of rumors that he’s got some skeleton’s being drug up.

Sorry to have absconded with your OC, but it’s a good day in Nole-ville.

i posted sommeting about who we should hire, err, more like who i thought of that was available. i think promoting todd monken woudlnt be a bad idea, but speaking of perriloux’s talent, i know monken is more of a passing guy. i thhink right now hes the WR/passing game cordinator coach. or something. we shhould also photoshop jeff garcia

You know, I’m reconsidering my position. It used to really bug me that Miles would interfere so much in the offense.

But the more I think about it, Saban totally runs the defense wherever he coaches; whoever he calls his DC is just a stooge to get him coffee and pick up his dry cleaning. (See also: Wil Muschamp)

So if Miles wants to run the offense and just hire some clown to hold the OC title, that’s fine. But if it flops, it’s all on Les.

I certainly do understand why it would irritate someone like Fisher, who is not, by any means, a stooge. A guy like that wants to be able to do his job.

I think we should take a look at Louisville’s Paul Petrino.

Parker- that’s not a bad idea if Paul doesn’t go with Bobby to Atlanta.

What about Larry Fedora from Oklahoma State? He was OC at Florida back in their first hay day and has a pretty stout offense running at OSU.

I didn’t know much about Paul Petrino before this post. I looked some stuff up and that sounds like an overall winner to me.
