Oregon Ducks offensive coordinator Gary Crowton will replace Jimbo Fisher in the same capacity at LSU. This should dispel concerns by some (read: Jimmy Ott) that Les Miles seeks to run an old school, conservative, pound it up the middle style offense. It also makes us feel a little better about LSU’s commitment to keeping a top-tier coaching staff rather than going cheap and promoting some unknown assistant from within.
Here’s Gary Crowton’s recent coaching history:
- Offensive Coordinator, University of Oregon (2005-2006)
- Head Coach, BYU (2001-04)
- Offensive Coordinator, Chicago Bears (1999-2000)
- Head Coach, Louisiana Tech (1996-98)
- Offensive Coordinator, Louisiana Tech (1995)
- Co-Offensive Coordinator, Georgia Tech (1994)
- Quarterbacks Coach, Boston College (1991-93)
We’ll be interested to see what they pay Crowton, compared to what Jimbo Fisher was making. Probably a bit less, but he gets the huge bonus of like, not being in Eugene, Oregon. You really can’t put a price on that.
Thanks to Kevin Donahue for the tip on this. Here are some links to media stories on the Crowton hiring:

Being a big-time BYU fan, I can predict how LSU will do over the next two years. They will have good year this next year (assumming they have a good team). Their offense will light it up and they will be the talk of the SEC. Then sometime in the middle of the second season (with Crowton as o-coordinator) you will notice a falloff. His gameplans will seem unplanned. He will not make adjustments.
Take not of the records of the teams that he has been with. It follows this trend. I will feel sorry for tiger fans next year. Good luck!
